What kind of primer do I use for oil based paint

I'm painting a wooden table with oild based paint. Do I need an oil based primer or will any kind of flat paint do just fine?

  1. you can paint oil based products over latex (water) based... but you can't paint water based (latex) over oil... so you can use a regular primer. I wouldn't use regular flat paint unless your table is an unfinished, very light, even grained wood. try kilz... it's the best.


  2. You need a primer not paint...different stuff.  What are you painting over?  Make sure you properly perpare the surface then use a good primer, it is more important than the paint for good adheasion.  oil paint will stick to either but what the primer is going over is what makes the difference  

  3. Primers should list compatability as to using latex[water based] or acrylic[oil based] paints. My suggestion is to use a product called "Kilz" a very popular and very effective primer base which also will block grease,oil and other type of stains from bleeding back through a finish paint.   4. I have always liked and used BIN primer.It comes both alkyd and latex base.I would use the Alkyd (oil ) base.BIN primer is available in all paint stores.7/31
