  1. How will she assess your son? What areas of needs does she think are most important? What kinds of therapy strategies will she use (physical, occupational, speech, language)? What kinds of progress reports will you get?

Will she work with your son in you home? Will she incorporate you into any sessions so you can carry over strategies? Does she have a behavior modification strategy?

These all would apply if your definition of habilitation specialist is the same as mine :)

    Best wishes to you!

  2. You should ask her for references and verify them first. Then ask her what attracted her to the field. Give her time to answer. If she says"I really love helping people" ask her why. Give her a list of scenarios and look for her facial expression or natural reaction. Scenarios such as, "while working, a neighbor reports that one of the folks you are responsible for has stolen his wallet, how would you handle this?" People may be able to fake interviews but if you ask touchy questions you will see her comfort level remain the same or decrease. Becoming uncomfortable with certain scenarios is a sign that she will not be able to do the job. The wallet scenario will let you know how much respect this person may or may not have for persons with developmental disabilities.
