Question:

What kind of "diaper" do you use when you take your child swimming

I took my 6-month-old swimming today for the first time...we put a Huggies Little Swimmers diaper on her before we left the house and she peed right through onto her car seat before we even got to the pool.

Is this common? Should I have waited and put the diaper on when we got to the pool? Are they less absorbent when you aren't in the water? I think it may have leaked because it was just too big...she is still in a size 2 diaper and will be for some time, but the smallest size they make is a 3. Is there something better out there to use than the special swim diapers? Anything that's washable and reusable? What do you use? I'm new to the whole swimming thing, can't you tell! My daughter loved it, so we plan on going again.

  1. yes, that's quite common for them to leak like that. they are only to be used for the pool. i worked in daycare, and was unaware of this, and one little boy only brought the swimmers one day, so i put him in it-leaked immediately as soon as he peed. they were the correct size, just not meant for anything but water. if that's how they work out of the water, i'm assuming it works the same way in the water, except swimmers are going to be more waterproof and wont fall apart so that when they poo-that should be held in. next time, just put it on her right before she gets in the water.

  2. i've never used the little swimmers. i think they are designed to not absorb liquid but to just be a cather for any poopies. when my son was little i had a bathingsuit for him that was patterned cloth on the outside and plastic on the inside. it was like a diaper. this would basically just catch any p**p if needed. he out grew that so i got him a pair of swim trunks with the mesh liner in them. i use a regular diaper with the trunks over top for the most part. but our public pool requires a little swimmer....

  3. they were probably just too big, but again I guess I could never tell if they leaked because my son was always in the pool! I would wait until you get to the pool to put one on her, that's what I always do and I have no trouble with them... No their not reusable, their desposable, and I always use the huggies little swimmers.

  4. I always just used a cloth diaper & rubber pants so as not to waste costly disposables & further mess up the planet. Works just fine, but watch out for bubbles...lol Could mean floaters are soon in the making & you want to avoid that at all costs! lol

  5. It was probably due to the size being too large.  Use one that is a proper size.

My niece wore Li'l Swimmers when she was a baby.  the great thing about them, is that if they don't pee in it, you can just let it dry and use it again.

My niece is three... and come to think of it... we still have her diaper here with some wipes and baby shampoo.  Heh.  She doesn't need it now.  But, I took her swimming in that thing three times, and it still looks new.

As babies get older they won't really pee in the pool or ocean because they are just having fun and don't use it.

  6. use a swimming diaper and try padding it if it is too large and put it on when you are about to go swimming
