  1. Gearbox and I share the same ideas and points about this subject.  Having worked in a Top 50 station, I can tell you that stations owned by big corporations often play fewer and fewer cuts than ever.  The bigger the market, the worse it is.  When I was growing up, small market stations were the best to listen to.  They played what no bigger market station would play.  My dad would ground me for listening stations I could barely pick up (what any ham would do). All of the stations I enjoyed when I was a kid have changed owners and formats since.  It's all about ratings and advertising dollars now.

One station that brings sweet memories was the former AM east coast powerhouse WOWO at 1190kc.  Every night I would listen to WOWO broadcasting at the full FCC maximum of 50,000 watts ERP (for 75 years I believe).  It would hit every state on the east coast plus the Bahamas.  I am glad to say that my voice was heard on that station several times.  Truly historic!

I have adopted Clear Channel's Format Lab for HD radio (http://clearchannelmusic.com/formatlab/ ) while I'm at work.

Because I want the format of stations I listened to when I grew up, I bought automation software (what most radio stations use now) to schedule my own format.  It's rather neat.  I save the result into a mp3 file and burn it on CD to play in my truck.  Sometimes I will stream it from the house and play it at work or the laundromat or at a friend's house.

  2. I listen to all of it.. normal, sirius, some XM, internet radio

And the reason why will be come clear soon...

The state of radio in today's market... d**n that's a good subject that never gets talked about as much as it does on the radio forums I hang out on.

But am I happy? No not really as radio in most major markets have become so cookie cutter that listeners of any moderate length of time are turning off the stations in my opinion in those markets and going to IPOD or sat radio due to lack of variety as the listeners who do respond to offers of what to play on radio seem to be the songs that music fans are burnt out on and have turned to other means to listen to something different.

I hate to say it but sat radio is only about 1 step up and the reason I haven't bought yet.... it's not much better than radio playlist currently.. IF I was in the boondocks, I'd change my mind, but having a choice of over 50 something stations on am and fm, I'll stay there.

Actually my favorite stations are small town stations that play a wider variety of music for the listener and so one or two I'm burnt out on I'm not as angered about as 1 out of every 5 for instance on major market radio.

For instance, one radio station I know of 10 years ago had a record collection of close to 3,000 songs.. that was widdled down to about 800 and before the station came to an end.. it was down to 250 songs.... A major collection gone down to nothing.. and people wonder why America looks elsewhere now

  3. normal radio and i think that they need more of a variety. where i live they have more country than anything and i like all different kinds of music not just one.

  4. i listen to outlaw country (63), old time radio classics (118), some news and talk shows, and Car talk on the weekends.

Sirius is the only way to go.

  5. The main station that I stay faithful to is an FM talk radio station called 97.1 FM in Los Angeles. I am happy with it and love it so much because it just keeps me laughing all day. I could seriously leave that station on all day and not want to change it. Its just sooo entertaining and always new and different. With music radio youd want to kill yourself by the end of the day if you left it on. With talk radio the topic changes every hour or sometimes sooner than that. Its just always so fun. Ilove it and you can always call up and join the conversastion. This station is the only one I can bare to listen to. If im away from a radio i listen to on the internet www.971freefm.com  :)

  6. I use online services where you don't need to work too much and where no human is blabbering on about the music,

Last.fm, Pandora, MeeMix, all pretty good choices

  7. Normal radio.  Gives me what I'm looking for--good ole' country music, weather and traffic.

  8. ..just a normal radio!!!..the purpose why i listened to the radio is just to listen music and got daily updates of today's hottest charts!!!...

  9. normal, so i can hear musik, and no am not happy with it, 2 many morning talk shows!
