We have had reports in my neighborhood of mountain lion sitings. I am curious how far they can actually travel....

  1. The home range of mountain lions can vary a lot.  Males have a much larger home rage than females, and how large it is will depend on habitat types (they will try to acquire a large enough territory that they can find enough food for themselves).  In prey dense areas, it is much smaller, but a reasonable home range size can range from 50-200 square miles (up to 300 square miles has been reported).

  2. Chris B. nailed this one.  May I suggest reading some of the studies done by Stan Cunningham of the Arizona Game and Fish Department?  If you can't find any of his books, go to a science library at a university and look in the Journal of Wildlife Management.  Similar authors include Harley Shaw and Kirby Bristow.
