Is it an ok place for someone in their mid twenties? What's your verdict, is it a desirable city to live in or a not desirable city to live in?

  1. Although you get a few drunk people and druggies, as long as you don't live next to a main road in the worser parts of Bristol, you should be alright living here. You can get a job easily and it has a lot of good shops.

You should be fine living here, as long as you're careful.

Ps. Don't by a house in Withwood, Hartcliffe or any other areas near them (they have a bad reputation!)

  2. Depends what part of Bristol you're living in. Like most big cities there are good and bad areas. The bad areas are really not good places.

Avoid St Paul's, Hartcliffe, Shirehampton, St Werberg's like the plague.

Good areas include Westbury on Trym, parts of Bedminster, Horfield, Filton,  parts of Eastville.

You should check out a site such as upmystreet.com for facilities, demographic and crime figures for various districts. Another clue is to look at estate agents' sites. The properties in good areas will more expensie than their equivalent in a bad area.

Bristol has a full and interesting history. This has led to an inheritence of some very attractive buildings still standing (depite the efforts of the Luftwaffe and the 1960' planners).

There is a thriving nightlife, some excellent pubs (and a few grotty ones); good selection of cinemas; first class shopping; a couple of really good theatres; fine locally brewed ales; fantastic museum and art gallery; 1st rate university and all the studenty type things (clubs, bars, etc) that grow up around it.

The communications links to the outside world are among the best (you can't beat Brunel's Great Western Railway), even though the city busses leave a bit to be desired. Bristol airport (Lulsgate) now has links to almost anywhere that's worth going to.

    For a 20-something, especially if you're a professional, it's superb.

  3. it has some of the bars. It constantly growing and has a good atmosphere. It is no rougher than any other major city.

It is currently having a mass amounts of money being spent on upgrading the shops. See  cabots circus and you will get the idea. Lot's of apartments are being built and we have some great harbour side pub's and clubs. Be warned it is expensive to buy a house. There is a good mix of concrete and greenbelt. Lot's of students though!!

for a mid twenties desirable everything you could want.

  5. it is a pile of poo!!!!! my family all left individualy over the last 10 years now they live all over the country and they are much happier

  6. I wouldn't live anywhere else.

The Bristolian accent isn't the coolest though. We all sound like farmers (pronounced "farrrrrmers" in true Brissle)

  7. i've just moved in, Im a muslim, people are friendly no racism so far, better education than birmingham

  8. DEpends what you want to do. If you like the nightlife - it has that.

If you want beautiful scenery - its no more than two miles from the city limits.

The locals are friendly enough, usually.

All in all, best place I've ever lived.

EDIT: if you're here in July, don't forget to visit Spawned on the 5th of July, at the Rising Sun, in Pensford (near Bristol). 5th July. Should be a laugh.

  9. I live about 30 mins from Bristol. It has a good rep for clubs, shopping, and (of course) football, what with City!!! There is a darker side to bristol, but then thats true of all cities. I've thought of moving there in the past.

  10. Firstly, I must confess to being a bit biassed, as I am a Bristolian.

It's a great place, with everything you can find in a big city but with a small town feel. Having been a major port, it has a cosmopolitan population.

OTOH, the public transport is dire and the local council couldn't find their way out of a damp paper bag.

But I still wouldn't want to live anywhere else.

  11. im 23 and born here, travelled all over the world and proud to call it my home.

best areas, --Gloucester road (runs from near enough the centre to horfield 2 miles long) funky shops bars and restaurants, park street and clifton (mainly for architecture and nightlife--try the triangle, whiteladies road and the downs),  leigh woods and ashton court, blaise castle (lawrence weston is the location for this beautiful place  which isnt so nice but hey) montpelier - culturally up and coming,

and  places i would avoid at night would be some parts of st pauls, some parts of easton (have lived there some is nice but some not\), hartcliffe, withywood and southmead(but these are out of the centre so youre unlikely to venture out there if your a student or want to chav spot)

Good places to LIVE if youre a young woman id say, Redland, Cotham, Clifton (top end prices- very central and nr the Uni), Horfield, Bishopston (basically the glos road area) and despite what some one else said theres not much wrong with filton (next to horfield- v studenty) its just 3 miles from the centre and affordable--i never had any probs livng there.

Also the new cabot circus opens in september with a huge flagship Harvey Nichols plus 100 new shops, all the high st faves plus Urban Outfitters, Zara, Huge new Primark and huge House of Fraser.Better get saving to shop till you drop!!

    good luck x

  12. I think it's reputation is quite trendy, a lot of my friends chose to go their for Uni because of it. So i guess it's quite studenty too... so based on that I'd say quite desirable.
