What kind of resin to use for making surfboard?

does anyone know what type of resin you supposed to use for making surfboard... maybe actual product name would help.. or easy instructable sites.

  1. there are two types of resin epoxy and polyester resin. the polyester resin is much cheaper and easier to work with you can buy buckets of it, and it is what most surfboards are made out of, all you do it pour as much as you need into a tub and add a few drops of catalyst to make it cure then use it.

    the epoxy resin is used in pro model boards and also f-one racing cars ect. it is usually used with carbon fiber, it is much more expensive and is a little harder to mix and get right.

    almost any marine store will sell the polyester resin, your better off buying a big tub of it, as making surfboards is fun and may become a new hobbie.


  2. You will need two resin systems. One for the base and one for the outside or surface. The surface will be a gel coat. The base coat can be either epoxy or a polyester. The epoxy is better. Any boat supply source can supply you. Read the instructions! I assume you will have a solid foam core. Shaping cores is difficult. See if you can find a board maker who will sell you a 'shape'. Making boats and boards is good fun.
