I haven't been on a bike for 20 years and I'm over 300 lbs. but I have been on a crappy brand mountain bike for the past month to get back into the swing of things. I also have less than $1000 to spend on a bike.

  2. recumbent or fixed-gear.

    lugged steel.

    20 years old.

  3. If you're looking for a bike just to ride around the city then look at Giant's Transcend line. They retail between $500-$700 depending on what extras you put on. For city riding you get a good solid frame, large diameter, thin tires, and a comfortable seat (which is good for those with a larger bottom).

My wife and I each bought one this spring after testing several road bikes and love them for commuting to work and just going on nice rides around the city or to run errands.

Whatever you go with, go to a specialty bike shop and get the bike sized for you (they have bikes in your price range). Don't buy from a big box store.

  4. I would look for something like a Trek 520 touring bike.  The steel frame is a bit more flexible than an alloy frame which will make it a bit more forgiving on bumpy roads given your weight.  It's a little over your budget but this is the time of year the 2008 bikes will be reduced so you might pick one up in a sale.
