  1. Definitely a hamster. I've found that guinea pigs live too long to keep a 10 year olds interest, and require too much care. A pair of rats require too much time daily for a 10 year old to be responsible for. Hamsters are entertaining and fun, but don't have incredibly long lifespans and are very easy to take care of.

  2. Hampsters are pretty easy to care for and highly amusing.

Just make sure to clean the cage often or it'll stink.

  3. Teddy bear hamster

  4. I would definitley get a hamster.

I had one when I was 8 and 10 and it was a great pet.

They are very easy to take care of and love to be played with.

  5. Nothing. I am completely against a child getting a pet it wants. It is not the child's responsibility in the long run. It is the parents. If the parent is willing to get a guinea pig look into them, but make sure your mom is ready to take on the care when and if your sister decides she doesn't want to anymore.

www.guineapigcages.com and www.guinealynx.com are two good guinea pig sites.

http://hamsterhideout.com/forum/ this is a good hamster forum.

Owning a dog or cat is easier and I say that based on experience. I spend so much more time taking care of my piggies compared to my dogs and my former cat, even with my dogs/ cat being on a raw diet.

www.bigdogsporch.com can help your mom learn about dogs and the proper diet they need to be on. Please ask your mom to consider a cat or dog.

  6. Well, I would personally recommend a hamster, a Syrian. Dwarf hamsters or Robovski's are recommended for teens, and need experiance. Hamsters are cuddly and playful, solitary, and are very easy to train a few tricks. Just be sure you don't have any predators in your house (cats, dogs, etc.).

Rats are another popular pet, but many people don't like them for their history, tails, and feet.

Gerbils are like hamsters, but they look like they have eyelashes and they have long tails with fur on the tip. They are known to jump, too!

All and all, a hamster is the best to get for begginers on pet ownership. My friend gets rats now, but her first pet was a hamster. Also, keep in mind that places like Petco MAY hold hamsters from a mill (a place where they are breed in an unhealthy environment), so get one from somewhere you KNOW they come from breeders that are healthy. And be sure to tell your sister if she gets one that hamsters live 2-4 years or more. My hamster died yesterday, and she was only a month below 2 years. It was from a disease. So be sure to clean the cage once a week and change the water daily. Use ONLY Aspen or Pine shavings for bedding, as they are as natural as it gets for a hamster's instincts. Good luck! :)

  7. A rat, their clean, smart, cheap, never bite and entrtaning i should know i've had ALOT of diferent rodents.

  8. A rat definitely. Hamsters are more likely to bite and a rat only very rarely bites. Their very loving creatures (Much more loving than hamsters) and your child should have great time training the rat to do tricks. Also rats ALWAYS want out to play (except if their ill of course) so i would personally recommend a rat also because their more tolerant than other small animals.
