  1. Alexander the Great was the son of Macedonian King Philip II, who changed the infamous Greek Phalanx formation (a war technique) to 16 by 16 men. King Philip II's goal was to make Macedonia into a world power, replacing Persia (at the time the current world power, which was made up of what are now Iraq, Iran, and Turkey). King Philip II was assassinated by his Persian bodyguards, and Alexander was then named king.

Alexander the Great was tutored by Aristotle, embodying Plato's idea of a "philosopher king"; Alexander was also a bold warrior and a wise statesman. He defeated the Persians over and over again, finally chasing after Darius III and meeting them at Gaugamela (in Iraq). Darius fled with his amy, letting Persia be absorbed into Alexander the Great's growing empire. After fighting for more land to add to his empire for 11 straight years, Alexander died in 332 B.C. at 32 years and 11 months of age. Unable to speak on his deathbed, so as to name a successor, four of his best generals take over, splitting Alexander's land into four kingdoms: Egypt, Persia, Macedonia, and Greece. Although these kingdoms collapsed in 150 B.C., Alexander's legacy/achievements made history as he:

Preserved and spread Greek culture, altered Greek culture to Hellenistic culture, created many cities (and named a lot of them after himself!), promoted intermarriage between his lands and created a sense of kinship throughout his Alexandrian world. Note that the Hellenistic culture is a mixture of Greek + Indian + Persian + Egyptian  cultures. Because of Alexander a common language (Koine) was adopted in his lands; with Alexandria, Egypt becoming a melting pot of cultures and ideas.

Hope all of this info helped, and if you would like to see/read about some of it I recommend the Alexander the Great movie, as well the the book "The Golden Lyre" by Noel B. Gerson, because it shows a lot of examples of Alexander's character.

  2. Alexander the great was a ruler that wanted to treat the Persians fairly to gain acceptance, but because of his bad temper and drinking habits, it got in the ways of his good intentions. One of his achievement is that he practically conquered half of the world.

  3. he loved himself

  4. His greatest achievement as a ruler was to blend/unite Greek and Persian cultures.  The result, called Hellenistic culture, is the type of Greek culture we are most familiar with today.
