Its a mayonaise-based sauce. I make awesome tartar sauce with homemade mayo (whip oil, egg yolks, and lemon til fluffy), capers (a secret ingredient! has a good salty taste), minced pickles, garlic, and a little parsley, salt, and pepper.

Mayonnaise is the base.  Just add bottled pickle relish to mayo and you have tartar sauce.  How much relish to add is up to you and your taste.
