I'm watching the golf, with Tiger Woods, in Tucson, AZ today and I am confused by the scoring method. 1 up, 2 Dn, AS what does it all mean? How do they determine a winner with this type of scoring?

  1. That is match play

    Its one on one

    hole by hole

1up is winning by 1 hole

1Dn is losing by one hole

  2. the tournament is being played under match play. Match play is one player against another and you score by scoring lower on each hole. 1up refers to have won one more hole than your opponent, 2 up means you have won two more holes. 1dn means that the player is behind by one...and so on.

AN example of the final score would be Tiger Woods 2 &1, which means he was up by two holes with one hole remaing. Since he is up by two going into the last hole , the last hole is not played because there is no way of the trailing player to win(being as he is down by two holes and can only play one more)

JUst wait until you see a tournament usind the Stableford scoring system, that is one where you receive points instead of recording your strokes, 1 point for birdie, 2 points for eagle, -1 point for bogey... it is interesting.

Below I will attach a link to the USGA website, the USGA sets the rules for play on all golf courses in the United States.

  3. Match play. Goes by holes won by you or your opponent.

  4. That is match play scoring. If someone is 1 up, then they have won one more hole than their opponent. AS means all square, meaning they are currently tied.

  5. The format is match play and the person with the lowest score on each hole wins that hole. The player can either be up (ahead or winning) down (losing) or all square (even). The winner is the person who has won more holes than there are left to play for example 3 and 2 (3 holes up with 2 to play). This means the opponent cannot win even if they win the last 2 holes - so the match is over.

In the event of a match being all square after 18, then a sudden death play-off occurs.

  6. It is a match play tournament.  Each player plays a full round against one other player.  Scoring is on a hole by hole basis.  Starting out, players are all square (AS) or tied.  If Player "A" wins the first hole then he goes up by one hole "one up".  Play continues until the end of the round.

If there is only one hole left to play and player "A" is two up, then player "B" cannot win and the match is over.  Player "A" wins "2 and 1" (two holes up with one hole to play)
