What kind of sentance is this?

Question

The morning sun glared in the young boy's eyes as he searched the horizon for sight of the sail that would bring his father safely home.

It's a complex sentence right? (yeah I know this is super basic stuff, I'm just like really tired today and not thinking as fast as I normally do... :) )

You are correct.    It would be compound if it had two simple sentences joined by a conjunction.  You have subordinate clauses and relative pronouns (as, that).  Good call!
