  1. As a sewing machine tech I can tell you that with the right TNT (Thread, Needle, Tension) most any machine will do it on soft leather or canvas. The problem is most any machine will not do it for very long before they break.

My favorite machines for sewing light leather are the old Singers. A model 15 or 201. Though there are many strong household machines. Motor amps are important. Any that say 1.0 amp or above on them is a strong motor. Most old machines have steel gears that will never break as the plastic or nylon gears after the 1960's. Older machines are easy to find in thrift stores, yard sales, Craigslist etc.

Basically, don't even think about buying a new tabletop machine for these jobs. They don't last.

If you ever have any questions feel free emailing me. I also have a few for sale I would guarantee.

    Good luck.

  2. I have a Bernina and made all new covers  for my vinyl kitchen chairs. This machine can sew anything but you need to know a few tips first , like using the right needle and using a tearaway material on top or under the fabric so that it will slide easily under the needle.

You should take a few fabric samples with you and visit some sewing machine dealers and ask for a demonstration.

How heavy a leather or how heavy the fabric?  coated upholstery fabrics for instance, are often too heavy for a home machine -- you'll need a commercial machine.  Many leathers are likewise too heavy for home machines, but most will handle things like pigsuede easily.
