I wish to paint a picture depicting my great grandparents sea voyage from Gothenburg, Sweden to Hull, England in 1882. I need a picture or description of a vessel most likely used for that purpose. I am told that these ships were called coasters. Since steam was in use at that time, the ship may have been a steam and sail ship.

  1. NOT CLIPPERS>>>>

Coaster is a generic term for the small merchant ships that plied the coasts of the British Isles, such as the collier and tramp during the late 19th - early 20th centuries.

The Collier Brigs were favoured by Capt. James Cook.

    Some were Cat rigged.

  2. They were called ( Clippers )ships usually had 3 to 4 mast, and later were built of steel instead of wood, as they came into steam power age ;)
