im an advanced intermediate for example:i can do jumps just fine, im still cautious on moguls, i use complete parallel turns(no wedge), i can do shallow pow no prob, and im even starting to get into trees. and this is my first year!! im learning from a person with 35 years of skiing experience. im on rental skis this year that are really chewed up from past users, so anything thats new is definately a step up. im about 5'6 and i weigh around 150-160 something around there. can you help??

  1. You would want around 155-160 skis in length as you are 168cm. It mostly depends on what you prefer, the longer skiis give you,

    faster speeds

    more stability

    Better jumps,

    however the disadvantages are:

    it is harder to turn,

    you might go to fast

and they are harder to carry, (incase you are frustrated by carying skis)

    Shorter skis will give you,

Shorter quicker turns (better for moguls)

easier to to tricks (180 turns, etc)

    lighter and easier to carry,

the biggest disadvantages are that if you want to go really fast they are slower and not as stable doing some things.

I use skis which are 20cm 'to small' for me however i feel that they are fantastic. I can still achieve 60 mph (102kph) easily and i find that when going down moguls they give you the short sharp turns you need.

As for your weight, that is average so you can use the normal skis (some fat people need wider skis). If you like to/can ski backwards them you skiis with upturned backs, this does not really effect skiing but makes backwards skiing much much easier.

For off pieste skiing you need longer skiis and you want ones which have more flex to them, as this is more comfortable.

I would recommend sticking to brand name skiis, this is as i once used a cheaper set of skis and after a while of skiing i noticed a few cracks in them and they felt a  lot more 'floppy'.

    So for a sum up:

If you want to do moguls-Short skis with normal ends

Jumps and tricks-medium size skis with upturned ends

Fast downhills with jumps/no jumps-long skis with normal ends

Lots of tricks and fancy stuff and backward skiing -short skiis, upturned ends.

To find out what size of skiis you need ask the guys in the shop but for medium sized skis they should roughly come up from half way up your neck to you nose. For big skis they should be over your head, these i would NOT recommend.

For short skis not even at the start of your neck.

Hope it helps and if i was your height/weight i would take skis that when upright go to my neck.

  2. Get twin-tips they're so awsome plus they let you ski backwards and do tricks easier!

    I think K2's have some!

  3. talk to a rep from your local ski shop for ideas.

  4. I suggest Rissognols or K2. They are both a very good ski.  I have been skiing for 5 years and i had rentals for 3yrs. Then i went out and bought Rissognols fun 2 and i really like them.  They have good control.  I like going through trees and they give me good turning ability to stay clear from the trees.  Boots and bindings are very important to when it comes to them dont go  cheap. Your boot should pop out of your binding fairly easy if you fall. Make sure your boots are well insulated and fit you right. Poles don't really matter unless you depend on them. Have fun!!
