  1. sand and peat (well drained but having some nutrient/water retention capabilities)

  2. My mum loves palms, she always grew them in common compost, that you buy in bags. But she never soaked them just a little water in the summer

  3. Miracle-Gro© has a soil mix called “Cactus, Palm, Citrus Mix”, which I actually like using with in most of my pots and planters.

If you were mixing soil yourself – I would mix equal amounts, by volume, of loam or compost – peat – and sand. You would have a soil that drains well and also holds moisture – great for palms.

If you are planting the palm in the ground try to amend the soil to a consistency as close as possible to equal parts of loam – peat – sand and incorporate some of the native surrounding soil in that mix.

  4. Palms are surprisingly tolerant of soil types.  So long as the soil is not constantly flooded, or the soil pH is not too high, they seem to do just fine.  There are of course tropical and desert palms, but I work with many types of palms in Florida, and they are tolerant of dry sandy soils and wetter organic soils.  Tolerance of a wide range of soil types is one reason that palms are desirable landscape plants.  The poorest growing palms that I see are palms are planted along streets or driveways, where the limestone under the paving has "contaminated" the soil where the palms are planted, resulting in a high soil pH.  This results in nutrient deficiencies and poor growth.  Of course a well prepared soil, which is well drained and has some organic matter added, will give you the best results, just as it would with any other plant.

  5. most like well draned soil such as cactus soil or cycad soil.

in some stores like some nurisuries, and some lowes and home depots they have cati, cycad, and palm soil.

many palms though can tollerate normal potting soil and some can tolleate clay soil
