  1. an inch or so of gravel in the bottom will aid drainage.  well-drained fertile soil.  fafards potting soil


  2. You can put gravel in it - not absolutely necessary though.

    Fafard soils are top notch - but I wouldn't use the potting soil if it's a large tree or a big container. I would go to your local landscape supply house and ask for a "bark mix". It's heavier than regular potting soil, drains faster and is ideal for containerized trees and perennials.
