What kind of soup do they give you at the Japanese restaurants?

The soup that they give you with your salad before you get your entree? What kind of soup is it? Is it Miso soup? It's brown and oily looking with little white bulbs in it. What are the white bulb things? Is it fattening? Or is it something that I can use apart of a low fat diet?

Miso soup, or it could be Egg Drop Soup.

Miso soup has roundish tofu in it, and usually a little green onion.  Egg drop has streamy yellowish white stuff in it.Tofu is very non-fat, enjoy!

Usually they serve miso soup, which is made from a paste of fermented soybeans.  The paste will separate out of the water, which is the brown stuff you see.  Just stir it back up your chopsticks, drink and enjoy.

The white stuff is tofu, also made from soybeans.  Tofu is much like rice - it has no real taste by itself, but is added to dishes to absorb the flavor.  In addition, there may also be thinly sliced green onions, and seaweed.  Tasty and good for you.

Overall, miso soup is very low in calories and fat.  Tofu has almost no calories, no fat, and is high in protein to name a few of its benefits.  

A low fat diet would definitely benefit from tofu.  You can find tofu over in the produce section of the grocery store in both firm and soft varieties (the soft type is used in the soup.)  You can also find recipes on how to use tofu in a variety of ways - from smoothies to pan-searing as a meat replacement.  It's also a very common ingredient in Japanese and Chinese cooking.

its a mix of broth. VERY HIGH IN SODIUM!!!!!  the white bulbs are usually green onions.. or dried mushrooms.. not sure what else tho.. I wouldnt eat it on a low fat diet.. due to the sodium content!
