Question:

What kind of speaker system should I get?

I've got a Philips 42TA648BX LCD HDTV and have been pretty thrilled with it except for the painfully weak speakers on the back of it. I have an HD DVR and a Playstation 3 hooked up to it that I use for videogames and movies.

I'm completely clueless about home audio setups and don't know what to do to upgrade the audio. I don't have a ton of money and can't really afford to splurge on a huge new home theater system (probably in the $200-$300 range at the most). I'm not looking for an amazing audio experience, just something so that I don't have to strain to hear the TV at times. Would I just be able to go out and pick up a standalone set of speakers or am I going to need to get a receiver as well? How would I go about setting all of this up?

So, could anybody point me in the right direction or give me some insight as to what I should do? Thanks!

  1. If you want a good simple setup for not much money, just go out and get a stereo receiver and two good speakers.  The sound will be great for TV and games.  The setup will be simple too.

Surround sound is rarely set up right and is WAY overrated anyway.

  2. Take a look here http://www.amazon.com/s/qid=1218054391/r... You wont get much $300, but you said you wern't to bothered, so im sure one of those systems will cater for your needs...

  3. Do you not have a stereo at all? That can be hooked up to your tv. I've seen decent self powered speakers at Walmart for $50.00 that can hook up to your tv. Home theaters in a box can be had for $300 that would give you a much better sound and includes DVD player, tuner etc.

With the self powered speakers you would need nothing else so that would be your cheapest bet and what I would go with if funds are tight. Even computer speakers, the kind with little subs would work really well.
