What kind of spider has a skull on its back?

We live in eastern Mass. and my daughter found an unusual spider. She said it was similar to an orb weaver but had the image of a skull on its back. It reminded her of the moth in Silence Of The Lambs movie. I think they called it a death head moth. Anybody know what it is?
