It's brown in color, white lines on the back, a yellow rectangle on the belly. The leg color changes at the joints from light brown to dark brown, 2 legs stick out in the front- 2 in the back- 2 on each side. I live in central California.. Can you help?

  1. Unfortunately I can`t help without more information.

Spiders can be identified from the type of web, the shape of the body, what it`s doing, how it sits, where it`s found (not just what country or state, but what kind of place - garden, house, on the ground) etc. With this information, the colour/pattern helps narrow it down. But just the colour doesn't help much.

here are some hints for some common types of spiders:

Araenids (Orb weavers) - Spider sitting in an orb web (with concentric circles and spokes like a wheel)

Jumping spiders - They dont build webs, and jump instead of walking/running. They also have two big (very cute) eyes in front.

Wolf Spiders - usually found on the ground, dont build webs, and mostly brownish

Crab spiders - Colourful, often small, sit waiting with first 4 legs like a crab's pincers, waiting to grab insects.

Of course, a picture of your spider would help. You could also do a google search for the above kinds and see if any of them fit your spider's description.

  2. Learn to ID  it with the help of these sites and even if you do not find what you are looking for you will be able to ID any bug in the future -
