What kind of spider is black with yellow squares on its back and brown legs? ?

You didn't say how big it was, if it was about 2 or 3 inches long and some are even longer,  my best guess is that it is a Silk Spider or Banana Spider, they come in many colors and patterns, they are harmless. They are Common to the Southeast, particularly Southern Georgia and Florida, but the have been seen as far north as South Carolina.

Hello.  I live in SC and use to live in GA.  I know exactly what spider you are referring to.  I have a picture of it on my Facebook page.  Here is a link to another picture of it that is more close up.  It is called Argiope Aurantia.  It is actually commonly found in all lower 48 states - not just the south.  Fortunately, they are not poisonous.....just scary looking.  :)  http://www.insectidentification.org/inse...
