  1. The black widow spider is a group of spiders which includes the southern black widow (Latrodectus mactans), the northern black widow (L. variolus), and the western black widow (L. hesperus). As the name indicates, the southern widow is primarily found in (and is indigenous to) the southeastern United States, ranging from Florida to New York, and west to Texas, Oklahoma and Arizona, where they run particularly rampant. The northern black widow is found primarily in the northeastern United States and southeastern Canada, though its ranges overlap that of L. mactans quite a bit. The western widow is found in the western United States, as well as in southwestern Canada and much of Mexico. Black widows range in the southern parts of British Columbia, Alberta, Manitoba and Ontario - especially on the Bruce Peninsula. There have been incidents in Sweden and Denmark with black widow spiders being found in cars imported from the southern U.S.[1][2]

  3. Spider coloration varies quite a bit.  There is a brown widow but it does not have the hourglass shape.  There is quite a lot of patterns in many species but I have never heard of another besides the black widow that has an hourglass shape.  It is not always an hourglass but it is aways red on a black body.  There are many families of spiders that are brown and have the large belly shape like that of the black widow. Here is are sites with many pictures to compare.
