That sounds like an incredibly beautiful animal.  I am reasonably familiar with all the spiders in the USA, but not one fitting your description, especially if it's the size of a quarter.  Are you talking about the size of the "whole" spider or just the abdomen?

Species /Herpyllus ecclesiasticus/, the Parson Spider, and yes they are pretty.
