Im 15 years old and I want to start playing ice hockey. I'm not getting my equipment yet, I'm taking a few more skating lessons to get all of the moves and stops down, but when I need some equipment, which kind is the best for a beginner? What brand of stick?

  1. if your a beginner, you probably wont feel the difference between brands so just go with a cheap stick at first.

  2. Equipent: Besides skates, jsut get whatever you can find used that fits. Skates, if you can find a used pair in the right size, great go for those. But otherwise get a mid level boot from Easton, CCM, Graf, Bauer or Mission. be sure to try it on, and heat mold it before you skate. Buy it at a pro shop, not online. Te reasoning is that they can help you fit it right and mold it, that's really important for a beginner.

Gear: Whatever you can find at play it again sports.

Stick: for beginners, I recommend an Easton Octane. Fiberglass shaft, wood blade. They renamed it the Stealth S5 recently though, you should be able to find one at lay it again in their new stuff. Don't worry about blade curve, but if you know your skating stance check the lie. If you skate really low or mid to low, 5 or 5.5. Midway up, 6. High, 7. Lies of 5.5 or 6 are the most common. If you don't know, 5.5 is a good start. Get a stick with a small curve, If you can find it the Iginla is perfect for a beginner. small mid curve 5.5 lie, closed. You can get a backhand off well, pass, and you don't learn bad habits from a large open curve. Later on you can change it up if you need to.

Don't worry about cutting the stick, you'll need to.  Cut it to where it comes up to your chin on skates. you can adjust it later, either shorter or with a stick extension.

    in short for stick:

iginla, left or right depending on which hand is on the bottom.

  3. Just a store bought Fiberglass stick for starters.. you can get them for 20-40 dollars.. Brand really doesnt matter.. just for beginning..

i personally use Koho.. but that's just me..
