I was looking at some of my zip up jackets and hoodies and they seem to all have different types of stitching. If i have a standard Brother sewing machine what are the steps to sew together pieces of knit fabric together? What is the correct method of sewing together a hoodie? I see a lot of these DIY hoodies but they dont show the sewing process. Help!

  1. See if your library has a copy of Kwiksew's Sweatshirts Unlimited -- that has a very nice discussion and step by step instructions for sewing on both sewing machines and sergers.

Otherwise, I"d suggest working with a purchased pattern, which will have instructions.

If this is a stable knit and you won't be stretching any of the seams, then a straight stitch will do for construction.  However, a  plain seam will look very homemade in such a garment, so I'd probably switch to a felled seam, which is not the first sewing a beginner usually does.  If your machine has a zigzag stitch, you could sew the seams with a plain seam, carefully trim the seam allowances to 1/4" (or a bit less) then zigzag the seam allowances together, allowing one swing of the needle to fall barely off the edge.  That will mimic the look of a serged seam, which is what ready to wear will use.

As to sewing order, I would:

    1) Insert front zipper (if there is one) and pockets

    2) Sew shoulder seams

    3) Insert sleeves

    4) Sew sleeve seam and side seam

    5) Sew hood

    6) Insert hood

    7) hems or ribbing
