What kind of substrate for a bearded dragon?

i have tile in my beardies cage. it keeps their nails filed down and is VERY easy to maintain

NO LOOSE SUBSTRATE ( causes impaction and can and probably WILL die)

I recommend, repti-carpet or tile ( if you want a nice and more natural look.

But if your looking for something cheap and easy, you can just use paper towel or newspaper.

For a baby or juvie, none, or paper.  When they get older, you can go to sand.

I use tile in my beardie cages, easy to clean, no chance of impaction, and looks better in my opinion...

Padded non-stick shelfliner is probably your best option. Avoid particulate substrates (particles); these include sand, crushed walnut shells, sea shells, gravel, woodchips, etc. these can be ingested and cause impaction, which in turn will eventually kill your bearded dragon. Paper towels can be used for young beardies, and are easy to replace and are very affordable. You can also use tile if you want, but use an unfinished tile; one that can help file down those sharp little claws! I don't recommend carpet of any kind, since it can snag on tiny claws. Alot of people tend to like newspaper, but dont use it; the ink can sometimes be toxic to beardies, and when wet, will usually tear easily, and the ink can rub off on their light colored bellies.

So, as a general summary, here you go:

GOOD:

-Unfinished tile

-padded, non-stick shelf liner

-paper towels

BAD:

-Sand

-Sea shells

-crushed walnut shells

-corncob bedding

-newspaper

-sand (of any type, especially calci-sand!!!)

-carpet

-any other similar, ingestible particulate substrates.
