  2. Well, here is a size chart based on your weight and how many times a week you would use the board. It has both shortboard and funboard sizes. This can at least get you started with the length and what not. As for the brand, you just have to choose what feels right. What brand feels right for me may not feel right to you. Good Luck finding your board!

  3. Well, I hate to tell you, but there are very few surf-able days in the Gulf. I know Gulf coast surfers hate to hear that, but its true. If the swell isn't being pushed by a 'Named Storm' there is not much to ride. (Funny enough, my first surfboard, purchased in 1966, was made in Texas).

Surfing is still great, even if you only get a couple dozen ride-able days a year, so go for it. You will need to improve your water skills. Ocean (even the Gulf) swimming is different from pool swimming. There are rips, and undertow and waves. Go to a surf shop ( a real surf shop, not a bathing suit store that sells some surfboards) and the folks there will help get you started. I recommend lessons, and they will hook you up with lessons, and even rent you a board to use while learning. Most beginners learn better on a long board, and long boarding is ideal for those small, barely ride-able days that you will have most of the time in the Gulf. The folks in the surf shop will help you pick the right board for your body size and skill level. have fun.
