  1. Waves are different not only in their size, but in the way they break, and how steep the become before breaking. I don't know where you surf, or how good you are (or how much time you actually spend surfing). I also don't know how big you are, and your body mass has a huge effect on what size board you should ride.

Instead of asking us this question on line, go to a good local surf shop. Talk to the folks there who surf the same breaks that you do. Talk about the factors I mentioned above, and they will help you find the right board for your break, body body size, skill level and budget. Get surfing advice from a surf shop, not people on on line, and you'll be more satisfied with the result.

I have been surfing since 1966, and I take my surfing questions to a surf shop. Good luck!!

  2. I would recommend two (2) options for you.

Option (1) - get an egg/funboard that is 7'0" feet.  It still has plenty of foam and will float you well and allow you to get into waves easier than a shortboard.  You will gain manueverability and speed which is really fun.

Option (2) - get a classic twin keel fish.  Not sure how tall and how much you weight but something around 5'10" to 6'2" should fit the bill.  You will gain much more speed than a fish and they are super loose.

Not sure how long you have been surfing and the types of waves you surf but I would suggest option (1).  Get a funboard, surf it, have fun on it, and when you feel that you want to continue progressing your surfing then move to a fish.

I have longboards, funboards, and fish's but depending on the conditions the fish is the most versatile board in my quiver.  If it gets really small (i.e. summertime dribblers) it still works but the longboard is ideal.

Have fun and go get a wave.

  3. I would get a Fun-board or a fish. You could also get a high performance longboard if you like long-boarding.
