Question:

What kind of surgery did my friends mom have?

I just met my friend's mom and she mentioned that she had a surgery, but she didn't tell me what kind it was and my friend hasn't told me either. I feel like asking her would make her uncomfortable, but I would still like to know. Her mom is totally normal except for these three things:

-She had to re-learn how to walk and move, but I don't think she had to re-learn anything mental

-She had to have a gold weight put into one of her eyelids so that it would shut at night because her eyelid won't shut on its own

-Her mouth is tilted permanently in an angle

These are all things that happened AFTER the surgery. Thank you!

  1. First of all, it must be a brain surgery. Brain controls our body activities. Brain surgery has no definite, sometimes the patient will lost some ability post-operation. So, your friend's mother now is in rehabilitate stage.

If she need not go for any radiation therapy or chemotherapy means that she is not likely to have brain tumor.

Of course, if she has history of high cholesterol or high blood pressure, it should be stroke.

If she had a fall, she might be intracranial( in the brain ) bleeding or accumulation of fluids in the brain - hydrocephalus and required VP (ventricle-peritoneal)shunt insertion.

Anyway, brain is a mystery organ that the knowledge need to be improved. That is what I assume your friend's mother maybe having now.

  2. It sounds like she had a stroke.  This could have been caused by a carotid endarterectomy.  She could have had to have some type of surgery on her brain.  Also there is a possiblity she has had a open heart surgery, and after coming off the bypass machine had a stroke as well.

  3. A stroke and clot removal most likely

  4. It sounds to me like she had a stroke

But there might be a reason they don't want to talk about it so I would be careful about bringing it up.

  5. sounds like she had a stroke but idk why shed need surgury for it. why dont you just ask your friend? you dont have to ask her mom im sure her friend would know. youre not being rude by asking her you just want to know. but i do agree with the firt answereer though sorry =/

  6. Did you have some sort of brain tumor or aneurysm that she had operated on? If it was only one operation something in the brain is the only thing I can think of that would affect walking, eyelids, and facial position. If your friends mom is dealing with some sort of brain problem (including cancer) then I can imagine it would make her uncomfortable to think or even talk about it. I would wait till she brings it up unless something happens that gives you an easy opening to ask. This is not something you would want to bring up in a casual conversation though...

  7. It sounds to me like she may have had a stroke..a fairly big one since she had to relearn to walk, etc. it could be a brain injury too?  After a stroke only 1 side of her face is affected, and the opposite side of the body(arm and leg)(wouldn't be able to voluntarily move them herself..and a smile would look crooked, as only half of the mouth is working. I've never heard of a gold weight on the eyelids, but i guess it's poswsible. why wouldn't your girlfriend just tell you, why all the privacy..i would just ask her directly, tell her you were conscerned, and wondered what had happened...she also may be embarassed if..

Lastly she may be incontinent(unable to control bladder or bowel, and may be wearing a 'adult diaper', a catheter(tube to the bladder).

  8. None of your business!!!

  9. I'm not sure what kind of surgery she had, but it sounds like she had a stroke.

  10. a stroke may present like what you have mentioned , the net result is brain cells ishemia ...so on CAT scan you may find a bleed if  thats fresh or ishmic changes if thats old and may see a mass when resolving , again brain stroke may cause damage to the cereberum which presents as opposite side hemiplegia or can present as periparesis which is not complete loss of power ... other signs are positive babinski s sign , there will be loss of power on the opposite because the nerve fibers coming down in medulla decussate ,

another thing that may be damaged is cerebellum mostly seen on MRI unlike CAT scan ..which is  involved in the balance of body in cerebellar ishamia you can find loss of balance , vertigo , dysdidokinesia , and nystagmus ...

i dont know wht the surgery they have done but if she has suffered a stroke then she might need a long term physiotherapy and a controlled blood pressure .......
