I'd also love to hear about the rats you own! I'll start by telling you about mine if you care to read lol...

I have 3 girls my very first rats they love to come out to play there names are Jellybean Dazzle and Buttons there all grey and white. I've only had them a few weeks and I love having them there easy to care for and clean! Its cute when you go to the cage and they come up to the door waiting/wanting to come out!

Thanks for your help and stories.

  1. I don't have rats anymore, but when I did, they always loved to dig and tunnel through piles of towels and blankets. Sometimes when they were being naughty, they'd dig through my laundry basket. Some of my rats also liked playing with newspaper folding into 'tents.'

Anything they can climb, hide in, etc. Some rats like to dig, too, and I've heard of others that enjoy playing in water, but I've never seen it!

You can hide sunflower seeds for them to find, things like that are fun for them, too.

But really, rats are so curious that they'll make anything into a toy! They also tend to get into places you don't want them...I panicked once, thinking I had lost one, when in fact she was just hiding inside my pillowcase.

Here's a very extensive list of rat toys you can buy/make:

  2. I have 5 boys, 3 of whom are still youngins. ;P Their names are Westley, Inigo, & Fezzik. My two older guys are Templeton and Reggie, who I adopted as big fellows.

Rats are smart creatures. If there's anything around, they'll find ways to make it interesting! Cardboard mazes are great, and so are cardboard towers with lots of little rooms that they can climb up! PVC pipes are some of my rats' favorite things. They crawl through and sometimes sleep in them. ;P Hanging bird toys are pretty popular with most rats, as well.

  3. i put out pillows and boxes and other fun things here are a few fun games i play with my rats:

    1) Fishing for Peas: set out a shallow dish with lukewarm water and put some frozen peas in there. watch as the rats dip their hand in the water and grab a pea. this game is kind of messy seeing as they often take the pea out of its shell then leave the shell laying around

    2) Tug-o-War : use a piece of string to play this game with your rats. have the rat grab one end of the string and you grab the other. it is very easy to beat the rat, so go easy. win once or twice, more than twice and your rat will get bored. on the third time let the rat win and watch as she parades around triumphantly with the string in her mouth

    3) Peek a Boo: play the same way you would with a baby

    and lastly.........

    4) Bruxing contest: you may have noticed your rats chattering their teeth together and wiggling their eyes. this is called bruxing. brux at your rat and see if she bruxes back, if she does do it again. keep going until she wiggles her eyes

    HAVE FUN WITH YOUR RATS!!!!

  4. oh i had a rat named Inky.. she was a white rat with a light black head and she was soooo sweet. she would climb trees and pounce in the grass. after 2 years she started developing mammory tumors and they soon got so big that they were half of her body. it was 300$ at our  vet to remove the tumors, and they would just grow back. soon she was losing lots of weight and we had to put her down :( . i still think about her and she will always be in my heart!

  5. Well I've never really owned rats, but I know lots of people who do. Get PVC pipes from the hardware store for toys, and also use hammocks, and some rats even like to chase lazers!

  6. Oh they just run around the room when they are out, playing with what they want until I take them away from it because they usually are quite naughty. They love to dig in flower pots of soil.

    I have tons of ratties.
