What kind of things should I include in a care package that I'm sending to a male friend in Costa Rica (he's lived there for about 4 years) and he's originally from the states.

I mean, like what kind of things do you think he's missing. I've already included a bunch of DVD's, Mac & Chez & a T-Shirt. Any other ideas????

  1. Speaking as a man who's been off the continent for some time...Pictures and favorite foods.  perhaps a game or 2.  btw, very kind of you to do this for him.

  2. The hot sauces here are better thean in the states NO HOT SAUCES..  I've been her for 10 years. When I get care packages I ask for pecans and spices. I bake a lot.  Sage cannot be found here. Celery seed. celery salt.  There is mac & cheese here  Kraft even.  Know that the package will go thru customs and a small tax maybe be imposed.  If he owns a hotel he may need a few small hand tools that are hard to come by here.  Ask him what he would like.  I live in the southern zone also.  In Golfito is the free port, where you can buy appliances tools ect.  Panama is not far away and they have even more American things.  Right now I am looking unsuccessfully for poppy seed to make muffins  LOL.

If you send a small package one that will fit in a P.O. box it will not go thru customs.

  3. Ask him!  What can he get in America that he can not get in Costa Rica? Also, what reason did he move there for?  Is he in the military?  Doing missionary work?  You could send him something that may help him with whatever he is there for.  Is he there helping support family?  (non-perishable foods, aka pasta, canned veggies and fruits, etc.)  You could even send things like shampoo, deodorant, kinds he can only get here.  Good luck!

  4. Maybe send some pictures?  Of you and him, or mutual friends/family, etc. It would also be nice of you to send a nice long letter.  The DVD's are a good idea!  Maybe also include a book or magazines?   Good luck! :)

  5. find out stuff that he likes that he can't get there...a certain candy or drink....you know him so you would know best what type of stuff he likes.  what you have sounds like a good start though :)

  6. In Costa Rica you are able to get almost the same stuff you get in the US, is called global economy :), I recommend to send him very local US stuff that he may not be able to get here, like a very special local beer or wine.

  7. You could send him a book or two.

Gift certificates can be helpful if you do not know what to get.

You could also send him some music CDs if you know what he likes.

  8. I don't know what they have there but I would try to think of lots of things that he can't get there like hot sauces, chips, homemade jam, etc.. Also, maybe a piece of framed photography of the city he's from. American flag..What you have so far sounds good!

  9. Pictures, a few burnt CD's, a nice card... and anything that isnt available there.

  10. Don't bother with a care package as it will get hung up in customs and he will need to go to San Jose to claim and pay and import duties.
