What kind of time do you get in the USA for possession of an ounce of pot?

Its not that I do drugs but im really interested to see the difference between australian laws and USA laws

Depends on your judge, lawyer, state, etc.  Sometimes you can just get prohibition and sometimes you can get charged as a felony and go to jail.  It really all depends on the judge and prosecutor.

Depends on what state you are in and where you are when you are caught.  Some states and/or cities allow a person to possess up to an ounce of pot while in the privacy of their own home....where on the other hand, in that same city or state, if you are caught with an ounce (or more or less) while in public away from your home you could get jail time or a fine.

i think an ounce is slap on the wrist and a fine.

That varies from state to state. My state is pretty liberal about it and you'll get 1 day in jail and a $250 fine. Other places they consider it a felony and slam you with fines and extended jail time.
