What kind of time should I be getting for 800m?

I'm a 15 year old girl, my personal best is 2.40 but I'm averaging about 2.52. Apparently the world record is 1.58, how hard would it be for me to get to 2.20 by the end of summer? Is it a realistic goal, I train for longer distances and cross-country but have more enjoyment in middle distance track.

  1. You are doing the wrong type of training especially the cross country you ought to be running at 75/80?% effort running multiple 800/1000 mts run 200/300 mts for speed work the real question however is who timed you. to get a realistic time you should join an athletics club where you will train and compete with guys about your own age or in the same age bracket you  would be running in the under 17's these older guys would give you something to aim at

  2. ...

I've noticed a lot of high school girls kind of bunch up at the 2:40 to 2:50 range, and don't drop below it.  Getting down to 2:20 seems to be a big drop in time, and often leads to the girls who hit that time qualifying, or near-qualifying, for state meets.

You've got the motivation.  You've got the talent.  You need to do proper training and have the opportunity for good competition to get to that time by the end of the summer.  If you're EXTREMELY self-disciplined, you can do this on your own.  Otherwise, it may take getting onto a summer track team with a good coach to get down to that time.

It's the beginning of July.  With proper training, staying injury free, and some good competition on the track, you can do this by the beginning of September.

P.s., the world record for women is 1:53.28, though some may cast the shadow of "performance-enhancers" over that performance.   Note the USATF.org site, you'll see it took but a 1:59 to win the women's 800 meters at the Olympic Trials.

  3. 2:20 is a realistic goal, but not by the end of the summer (especially since you are likely building a distance base right now for cross country season?)

I ran a 2:26 at 15 and dropped to 2:21 in two years.  Keep at it!

  4. It isn't a very realistic goal for this year, but maybe if you train hard for the next two years it may be possible.

Your time is good, i am 13 and i am acheiving 2.35

  5. It's hard to answer without more information.  Tell me how long you have been running and how much you are currently training.  Also, to run 2:20 in the 800m requires a good bit of speed. What is your best time for 400m?  Someone running 2:20 needs a 400m PR of about 64.

  6. i think it would be really hard but with a lot of determination you might be able to do it

  7. If you multiply the 20 seconds by 2 you get 40 seconds.  So if you were to run 6 minute mile and bring that down to 5:20, that would be a great achievement.

I think you have a shot, it'll be tough, but if you can get it, you deserve a pat on the back :)
