What kind of tree was this in San Francisco?

i was in SF and I noticed they have a lot of trees that have no leaves. Very strange looking. I couldn't find any pics of them to post them, but all i can describe about it is that they don't have any leaves, it's basically all bark. we saw them all along the walk to fishermans wharf.
