  1. native trees and plants are always the best way to go.

    you can go explore your local wooded area and dig up tree sapilings at any point in the summer free of charge.

    a lot of things they sell at nurseries you can get right out in your "back yard" for free.

    you always want to plant natives though. some exotics will proliferate and crowd out our native species.

    many asian species are hard on the natives. just check into it before you rush to buy.

    if you do want to plant something pretty and not common to the area make sure it isnt a fertile species. however, some species, even the non-natives are always dangerous.

  3. check out native trees of places a few hundred miles closer to the equator than you, or if you live on a mountain, those that thrive a thousand feet lower down.

It all depends on where you live and what is native to your area.  Oaks are beautiful, provide shade but take a long time to grow.  Or you could try a conifer such as Douglass fir or many of the different types of fir trees which grow fast and thick.  They provide a lot of homes and food for local wildlife and birds.

  9. if you want Cheap trees go to the nearest large power lines in your area,the hydro companies usually go through the areas and clear out the trees for fire safety reasons.Grab a shovel and some pails and dig out the trees you want/need and transplant them you are saving these trees from a mower or chemical spray these little seedlings are natural to the area and are free

    Look to what grows around you and pick one you like.  I'll bet you can find a seedling(free in the woods) about 1' tall and replant it.
