What kind of trees should I plant in front yard/backyard?

what kind of trees should I plant in front yard? I'm living in southern california, towards to the desert. The weather is very dry and hot. There is a lawn in the front yard, the tree will be planted in the lawn. we water the lawn twice everyday to keep it green.

I'd like to have a tree with relatively large leaf. So it can have some shade to keep the house and lawn a little cooler.

in the backyard, I planted peach, orange, plum, pear, apple, ... all fruits. it seems except orange, all others are growing very well. any suggestions for what to plant in the backyard? still have some space. :)

How about pistachios?  They are my favorite, but you need to get a male tree and a female tree.  (Ironically, defying nature, the male tree is the one WITHOUT nuts!)  They would grow well in your area, are great shade trees, but they can grow 30-35' tall.
