I live in the Northeast and want to plant trees at my property line for privacy.

I am looking for the most affordale tree that is:

1. tall, fast-growing and dense

2. good for privacy

3. affordable.

4. deer resistant

I would probably want to start out in the 6-7 foot range.

Any answers/suggestions would be appreciated and

  1. Tulip Trees.  They are the tallest growing native tree to north america.  They will grow up to 100 feet in cultivation and grow 200 feet in the wild.  They are fast growing trees once established.  Nurseries have them for a couple hundred dollars and you're getting a tree that is at least 10-12 feet tall.  If you're willing to spend the money that would be the way to go.  However, one of my neighbors bought one at Lowes for 60 dollars its a much smaller tree however.  Tulip trees get flowers in the spring that look like tulips.  They maintain a nice pyramidal shape and turn a nice color in the fall.  They are spectacular when planted in groups.

Junipers are nice for privacy however they are grow compact and you will need many more to cover the area that 1 tulip tree would cover.

Japanese Maples grow to slow to be used as a privacy tree.

  2. It all depends on where you live, the climate, heat, how much rain.some trees cant stand a lot of heat.Believe me i know,i lived in indiana where the seasons change and i had the idea that what grows there would grow here in Texas, west west part.I killed a lot of trees and flowers with the heat ,and no rain for months.check with a local grower to your area, check the internet also.

  3. If you want privacy, trees are't your best choice, and most trees are fairly slow growers.

For a good hedge that can grow rather tall and is deer resistant, I would steer your towards a holly (ILEX), such as a Savanah, Nellie Stevens or East Palatka. You can get these up to 12' tall from a wholesale nursery such as John Deere Landscapes or a local grower.

You could also plant a good conifer such as a Juniper like Blue Point, Spartan, Sky Rocket.

  4. go for a maple or japanese maple
