  1. Try Cointreau.Very nice.

  2. any triple sec - there's not much difference in that type of liqueur

  3. Jim's got it.  If you are drinking cheap tequila like Jose, don't bother springing for the good "triple sec".  Jose Cuervo gold tequila (or Oro) is nothing more then 51% blue Agave tequila with food coloring.  Why worry about getting nice triple sec with such low end tequila?

Go to the store, find a cheap bottle of triple sec, and poor it in.  I doubt you'd be able to tell the difference.

  4. I wouldnt use triple sec. I would use Cointreau and a splash of fresh orange juice for making my margarita's !

  5. I would use Contreau or Grand Mariner, both are basically top-shelf triple sec.  Grand Mariner has a congnac base so a bit more of a bite, which I like.

Both of these liqours are very pricey, so if your on a tight budget, any triple sec will work.  Just look for something that appears to be fresh, or ask what is popular-if your at a large liquor store.

  6. Although the ingredients are basically the same, the process for making Triple-sec varies quite drastically. There are 750 ml bottles that cost over $50.00 and that same size can be bought for $8.00 with the higher priced being Grand Marnier Reserve and the lower one being DeKuyper or Hiram Walker The fact that you're mixing it w/ a sour mix & Tequila negates the sublities you would notice if you were sipping the liquor,so in a margarita use the cheaper brands.

  7. Well first things first.  Why in the world would you want to drink Cuervo Gold?  That's a terrible tequila.

To get the correct tequila experience, don't drink anything that doesn't say 100% agave (like junk like regular Cuervo or Sauza). These are cheap poorly made tequilas designed to sell to college kids to get drunk. They are only 51% real tequila, and the rest are fillers like corn syrup and grain alcohol (and thus the hangover the next day is born).

The next part of the question is about triple sec.  Triple sec was added to tequila first by an American bartender in Palm Springs to make tequila more palatable for the wives of the Hollywood elite that hung out there at the time.  My point is that it's not Mexican; it's French.

Adding orange liqueur to tequila only started in Mexico after it became expected by American tourists.  Triple Sec is bottom of the barrel (although appropriate for Cuervo Gold).  If you want the orange flavor, upgrade to Cointreau or Grand Marnier and upgrade your tequila to a 100% agave one like:

    Cazadores

    Herradura

    Don Julio

Corzo  (please note this is not Cuervo)

    Pura Sangre

    Centinela

    Cabo Wabo

    Arette

    Dos Lunas
