Question:

What kind of turtle do you think this is and what does it eat?

We found this turtle swimming up to us in the Long Island Sound. A ranger at the beach told us it was a baby snapping turtle, but we don't think so. It has been eating like crazy, mostly a diet of minnows and mollies. For all the turtle aficionados, what kind of turtle do you think this is and what should be its proper diet? What should its environment be like? And, if you know, how can we tell if it's male or female? Thank you!

  2. I can't tell, but I'd try posting the pic. at happyturtlespub.org and kingsnake.com

you'll probably get better help there.

  3. it looks like a snapper because of the knuckle bumps on the shell not sure how to tell the s*x though im sure it will be hard to do.

  4. box turtle

  5. It's definitely a box turtle. If you don't take my word for it, just google "baby box turtle" and you will find the results identical to your pictures. You might also want to google "care sheet for box turtle" Good luck with your turtle!

    And I hope this helps!

PS. You cannot tell the s*x of a turtle until he or she is 4" long. :-) Have a great day!

  6. First of all, how much do you want for that turtle...seriously.  If you want to sell it, please let me know.  I will tell you what it is and don't listen to anybody else saying it is a map turtle, snapping turtle or anything else.  It is a Northern Diamondback Terapin.  My favorite elusive local turtle.  I've been trying to capture them for years, but due to the rough brackish terrain they live in they are extremley hard to capture.  Not to mention a faster swimmer than any other turtle I have ever caught.  The coolest turtle of them all...in my opinion.

  7. I'm with madsnake and yaj, for want of a better idea. Diamondbacks are protected in many states. They do very poorly in captivity and require brackish water.

  8. It is a northern diamondback terrapin. I am very sure of this. It's not a box turtle, snapper, or musk turtle. Please do some research on it since they live in brackish water rather than fresh water. (Brackish water is where fresh water meets salt water, like a river spilling into the ocean. There's no way to s*x it at this age.

  9. it's hard to tell but i know for sure it is not a snapper or box turtle(i own 2.)You might need to wait a little while  for him/her to age but just so you know box turtles don't have webbed feet.

here's a site just look at the pictures for the care sheets and find one similar http://www.austinsturtlepage.com/Care/ca...

    hope i helped,good luck
