We found it on the road in Raleigh, NC. Someone almost ran over it. We picked it up and brought it home. But we don't what it needs or where we should take it if we decide we can't keep it. Here are some pics:

  1. It is either a wood or some sort of wild box turtle...both of which are considered endangered and illegal to keep.  You should return it to where you found it but put it just off the road in the direction it was heading in.  If for some reason that is impossible, contact your closest fish and game/wildlife office and they can tell you.  In any case, it is a land turtle.

It is most definitele NOT a painted turtle, those are almost completely red on the underside of their shells-and are also aquatic.

  2. four-legged

  3. It is an eastern box turtle and the state turtle of North Carolina.  It is therefore protected and would be illegal to keep.  Please let him go.

  4. Easy w/ the pic!!!! Ornate box turtle. Going by where u are easternbox turtles are close in look's but i don't think easterns are that far down. It's a box turtle! Feed it alot of veggies and some worms or slugs! GOOD LUCK! Not sure about Ornates but easterns males have red eye's and female have brown!

  5. i dont now

  6. It's probably a painted turtle, box turtle, or snapping turtle, if it's nose looks pointed, it could be a snapper, just be careful if you pick it up, don't let it bite you.

  7. I think its a box turtle not positive but that's what it looks like very pretty though

  8. That would be an Eastern Box Turtle. I can't quite tell from the pictures but it looks like a female. Check out the website for more information

  9. probably a painted turtle or a box turtle if you found it in water it's a turtle if it won't go in water it's a tortoise

  10. omg its pretty i don't know ..but all i have is a tortise!!!!

  11. it is indeed a box turtle.  when you find a turtle in the road, and can safely do so, move it to the other side of the road in the direction it was going, period.  do not keep it. do not bring it home.  it is not a pet.  wild-caught turtles do not do well in captivity.  please return the turtle in the same area that you found it.  thanks.

  13. Lee is right. It's most definitely not a painted turtle. It's a box turtle. They only live on land. If you put it in water it would drown.  They eat vegetables and some insects like worms. Best of Luck!

  14. It is an Eastern Box turtle. Their numbers are declining rapidly, due in part to people that pick them up and take them home. They tend to do poorly in inexperienced hands.

My suggestion is that you release it where you found it; studies have proven that box turtles rarely survive translocation.

  15. its a male box turtle.

  16. Eastern box turtle, probably male, from the eye color. These are getting rarer in the wild. Releasing it where you found it is a good idea, if you put it on the side of the road to which it was going. If you keep it, try to recreate a woodland habitat. They eat almost anything you do except processed food, citrus fruit, and onions. They also eat earthworms and insects, which, I assume, are not usually on your shopping list.
