  1. Get a civic or a Jetta, but the civic will be more reliable

  2. Reality says that in that in the $2500 price range any car that has been well cared for and is in good operating condition and fine physical shape will be the best car to buy.

It doesn't matter who made it.  Chevy, Honda, Dodge, VW, Nissan, it really doesn't matter as long as the car has been well cared for and is in good running condition.

A clean low miles one owner Chevy is a much better car than a beat up old Honda with torn interior and 165,000 miles.  Even though when the cars were brand new the Honda would have been rated way above the Chevy for reliability.

  3. Buying anything that cheap is a big gamble so to minimize the risk, I would avoid the Suzuki, VW, and Mazda and go with the Honda.  I'm not saying it's the best because you never know with something that cheap.  I'm just saying it will have the best odds of lasting longer than the others.
