What kind of virus is a "downloader"?

My Norton antivirus detected a "downloader" and I dont know how i got it. I dont open weird emails or go on dodgy websites, how could i have gotten it? What kind of virus is a downloader?

It's a virus or rather a trojan that can actually download other trojans. Normally it is spread by email but there are many ways it could have got on your PC, including downloading software or even a dodgy update or a codec which was downloaded without you even noticing.

Strange that Norton didn't catch it when it was downloaded though.

A downloader is just a virus ready on the standbye to download spyware when at a good time where you are browsing
