I want to give my 9 month old Mastiff pup a vitamin to help him with his joints. He does not have any problems yet. I just want to give them to help in the future with problems. Is there any recommendations for what to give? Thanks in advance!

  1. Let's see, you're concerned about your puppy's future health/   That's good.

You want him on appropriate vitamins to strengthen his bones & joints?  That's very good

You want Y!A answerers to determine what's best for your puppy?  Thats BAD!

You're not even considering taking him to a vet, who is the most knowledgeable, and can determine specifically which nutrients would be best for your dog? Thats VERY BAD!

Bottom line: The vet is the only person you should be consulting about your puppy's diet, nutrition, and well being. Anything less makes you a poor owner! Take it to the vet for evaluation for vitamin & mineral supplements.

  2. it depends what kind of thing u want to give the vitamin for.

  3. Talk to your Vet about getting him on a Glucosamine Supplement.  I own a Mastiff, and he has been prescribed a particular supplement that is appropriate for him specifically.  I would feed a Large or Giant breed puppy formula.  Wellness has just come out with one, and Eagle Pack Holistic Select has a great one too. They have appropriate protein levels for a Mastiff and they also have some Glucosamine in them as well.  As far as supplements go, I would talk it over with your Veterinarian.

  4. Chrondritin and Glucosamine are good to give to dogs to help them avoid injury in the future. Talk to your vet and find out what would be best. Many foods today contain both in the ingredients already. Probably not the daily required amount to avoid problems, but some anyhow.

  5. Your pup should not need vitamins if fed appropriately.

Rosalie:The dog is a mastiff, which is considered a Giant breed, not a large breed.

Feed your giant breed regular adult dog food that contains 23%protein or less.

A raw diet is the ultimate diet for any dog, but I noticed the biggest difference in my great danes poo, as disgusting as that sounds, for dogs it is one of the best ways to tell when something is wrong.

http://www.bigdogsporch.com/ is a great forum for large/giant breed dog owners.

If you have your dog on puppy food or large breed food, stop feeding it immediately and get wellness adult or solid gold MMillennia. and start looking into a raw diet. The forum mentioned above can help you with whatever you decide to feed and if you want to feed supplements they can also give you experiences with their giant breeds.

papaw: Vets are not educated in nutrition. The education they do get is biased because it is taught by a representative from the common pet food makers such as iams, purina, and science diet. Do not ask any vet about nutrition, especially one that sells food because that is what they will recommend. If you want unbiased advice www.dogfoodguru.com is the best place to go. She is a canine nutritionist that does not sell any food.

  6. I would never give a dog a human vitamin for it's a toxin the them.

  7. If he does not yet have a problem, be careful giving him any extra stuff - much of it can do more harm than good.

One thing that won't is a fish oil pill.  The omega-3 fatty acids are powerful anti-inflammatories without being a drug, and are being included in many dog kibbles these days for that very reason.

Keep in mind that good quality dog food is already balanced, and in many cases, two substances will work in tandem - too much of one may make th other not work as well, if the ratio is not balanced.  So sometimes, adding more will make what you already have less effective.

A good quality Large Breed food should be enough, at least for now.
