What kind of wasp lives under ground it has red wings?

Tarantula Hawks deliver one of the most intense stings of the insect world.  They are rarely fatal but are always very painful.  They are always found where there are-what else?-tarantulas.  If you have them you may do well to hire an exterminator.

If you want to get rid of them, your local hardware store will have some bee & wasp killer.  (Honey Bees should be left alone)  

Since bees and wasps are active during the day, you'll need to treat the area (aerosol can) in the early morning hours when they are sleeping.  

They can be nasty biters-keep the kids free and clear of that area!

Tarantula hawk, indeed, Joe C. They are mean little bastids. Mark the hole carefully and deal with them at night. Don't try to be brave or honorable, sneak up on them in the dark and kill the whole family. They may in fact do the same to you.--- you gotta do the maximum solution tonite.
