  1. No solar blanket in use and a pool temperature in the 80-82 F range you should expect to lose anywhere from 1/2 to 1 inch on average due to evaporation if your pool returns aren't pointed up and are pointed across the surface ( less ripples). That's assuming an average night time temp of around 74-76 and there's no way I could take into account splash since it's so variable.

If you're concerned, you can do what's called a bucket test. Grab a plastic pail that's translucent, toss in a round ( no sharp edges) weight in it. Put that on a step on your stairs that's under water but won't totally submerge the bucket. Add water to the bucket until the water in the bucket is level with the pool water as seen from the side. Let it sit over night. In the morning have a look. If the water level in the pool is below that of the bucket, you have a leak somewhere in the pool. If it's at the same level or within 1/8 of an inch, you're fine. The water in the bucket is subject to the same temperatures as the pool water ( both air temp exposure and since it's immersed in the pool, it's water is at the same temp as the pool) so it's rate of evaporation is the same more or less. The only variable is ripples on the surface ( which increases evap rate due to larger surface area) but for this short a time, it won't be a big factor Rain? Doesn't matter. The bucket will also fill at the same rate as the pool so that won't ruin the test result.

  2. with lots of swimmers the gallonage could be in the 100s depending on size of pool
