What kind of wild bird is this?

Friend saw a bird... what kind is it?

NOT A ROBIN, CARDNIAL OR ORIOLE.

Saw in Catskills of NY

-size of a robin

-ALL Black Body

- BRIGHT "Electric" Orange belly.

- no spots or anything

  1. I agree with Liz..the only native wild birds that even remotely match that description are several species of oriole or a Black-headed Grosbeak.  It could possibly be some sort of an exotic that was someones pet and escaped.  Highly doubt that it would be the falcon mentioned by the other answer...as they are found in S. Mexico and Argentina.

  3. depending on the conditions in which your friend saw the bird, there's a pretty good chance that it was an Oriole or a Black-headed Grosbeak. Second year birds don't have all their plumage in, so any white markings may not have been fully grown-in yet.
