Passed this coming up I-95 in Baltimore 2/11/08 Looks like the wing of a jet liner at first, til you look closer and notice the unusual shape! Also note the part where it would attach to a fuselage; the sweep angle is extreme.

What is this thing?

  1. Not a wing, but a blade for a wind powered generator.

  2. Yep, I'd guess a medium sized business jet, like a Gulfstream or a Hawker, or something similar.  The "sweep angle" is just the wing root fairing, where it attaches to the fuselage.

The wing you are looking at is mounted on the trailer with the leading edge down, facing the car with the camera. The "Scallop" you are referring to is the inboard end of the  trailing edge of the wing, where it transitions into the wing root fairing.  It is quite common on aircraft wing structures, and is for streamlining the airflow as it flows between the wing and the fuselage.

Take a look at the wing on this photo of a Gulfstream 350...  While not as extreme as the wing in your photo, you'll see that the G350 has a similar transition at the wing root.

  3. I think its bigger than a Gulfstream wing, perhaps a 737 or an A-320. I can't be 100% though. I am pretty sure its not a fighter jet.

  4. Definitely the wing of a medium sized jet, like a Gulfstream V or something.  Basically a large business jet.  Not a fighter wing, it is too long for that.  I would guess a Gulfstream or a Citation X or Global Express. Something like that.
