i have a 200 amp main breaker box on my electric pole and i have a 100 amp breaker box in my trailer house. I would like to run a 4 wire feeder. What would be the minumum type of wire i could use. Do I need 200 amp wire or can i use 100 amp wire. The house has an aluminum tag stating 100 amp wire is used. but the electric company said get a 200 amp main breaker outside....at my pole....so can i run 100 amp wire from a 200 amp main to my 100 amp trailer house breaker box to feed electricity to my home.

  1. YOU CAN USE 100 AMP WIRE ONLY IF IT HAS A BREAKER AT THE POLE BOX FOR 100 AMPS

  2. Call a qualified professional electrician, they can do the work correctly, faster and easier than you can learn and do it yourself.

  3. How far?

  4. If you have a 200A breaker you should run wire rated for a minimum of 200A, which is 000AWG from this table:

If you go to smaller wire, or wire rated for less than 200A the wire will heat up before the breaker will trip.  The same thing goes in the house - if you have a 20A breaker you have to use at least 12GA wire.  You can run the 000AWG wire quite a distance before the resistance of the wire will cause an appreciable voltage drop as you will only have .075 Ohms for 1000 ft so for 100 ft at 200A you would drop just 1.5V in the wire.
